Dr. Derick Muhindo: African pharmacists in the diaspora and breaking barriers

Dr. Derick Muhindo, a Registered Pharmacist (RPh) in Uganda, embodies resilience and innovation in global healthcare. His journey from Uganda to the United States highlights not only personal determination but also groundbreaking contributions to pharmaceutical sciences and global health.

A Passion Ignited in Uganda
Dr. Muhindo began his academic journey with a Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy from Mbarara University of Science and Technology. Inspired by a commitment to make a meaningful impact, he launched his career as a Health Supply Chain Pharmacist with Medical Access Uganda Limited (MAUL) in 2017. His work focused on strengthening national supply chains for HIV/AIDS medicines across over 35 low- and middle-income countries. This role involved training healthcare workers, developing national logistics tools, and improving the delivery of essential medicines.
“I wanted to be part of something bigger—changing lives through access to life-saving treatments,” Dr. Muhindo reflects.

Pioneering Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences
In pursuit of deeper solutions for disadvantaged communities, Dr. Muhindo paused his professional career to pursue a Master’s and Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Mississippi. His research focused on cutting-edge drug delivery systems using technologies like 3D printing and hot-melt extrusion to develop subdermal implants and nanomedicines. His innovations have already influenced the development of new pharmaceutical products in the industry.

Breaking Barriers at Bayer Corporation
Today, Dr. Muhindo serves as a Formulation Development Research Scientist at Bayer Corporation, where he contributes to groundbreaking drug development projects. His research has been presented at prestigious conferences, including multiple presentations at the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) Annual Conference.

A Global Impact
Dr. Muhindo remains driven by the belief that science should solve real-world problems. His work continues to benefit communities globally, particularly in advancing access to life-saving medications.
