CMS old students shop for $2.5m for ICT project

Celebrate 166 years of growth, consistency

Nigeria’s oldest secondary school, CMS Grammar School, Lagos, is set to roll out the drums in celebration of its 166th anniversary. ​According to a statement by the Secretary, Ohi Ojo, activities marking the celebration will kick off on May 31, with a novelty football match ​in the school premises, while a career talk will be held on June 2, with Dr Charles Adeogun-Phillips (SAN), an old student, as ​chairman.

The speech and prize-giving day, which will be chaired by another old student, Col ​Ademola Onalaja, is scheduled for June 4, while the grand finale, including foundation laying ceremony for the $2.5 million Information and Communication Technology (ICT) ​​building, and Founder’s Day thanksgiving service, will hold on June 6.

The event will be held ​​inside the Babington Macaulay Chapel of the school and will be followed by a thanksgiving luncheon. Highlight of the luncheon, according to the secretary, will be the conferment of honorary ​membership on some notable personalities, including ​the school Principal, Revd. J.A Ogunyinka and Mrs Adejumoke Bako, wife of Reverend ​​George Bako, a former Director General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).

CMS Grammar School, Lagos, was founded on June 6, 1859, by Revd. Babington Macaulay ​​with six students. The school has produced several outstanding Nigerians, including the late former Head of Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan.
