Rumexx Foundation promotes STEM with Aba math Olympiad

The Rumexx Foundation has launched the Aba Mathematics Olympiad, a competition aimed at fostering excellence in STEM education, with Anyiam Chimezie Divine securing the top prize of ₦500,000.

Held at Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Abia State, the Olympiad featured students from private and public schools across the region. After two competitive stages beginning on May 3, 2025, the final round on June 1 saw the top 10 participants receive cash prizes. Iwuoha Amblessed Nnaemeka placed second, earning ₦300,000, while Ike-Umeojiaku Elvis Nzubechukwu took third place with ₦200,000.

Mathematics teachers who demonstrated outstanding dedication were also honoured with cash prizes.

Event coordinator and mathematician Dr. Charles Nworu emphasised the importance of mathematics in national development, stating, “This competition serves as a timely and impactful intervention aimed at reigniting the passion for learning and excellence in mathematics. Mathematics is the foundation of all scientific and technological advancements.”

Despite invitations sent to 200 schools, only 14 participated in the inaugural edition. The Rumexx Foundation considers this a starting point for promoting mathematical excellence in Aba, a city renowned for its entrepreneurial spirit.

Foundation founder Eleanya Urum Eke, also the founder of Risevest, expressed enthusiasm for expanding future editions of the Olympiad. “We received tremendous support, including donations from other founders like Mark Essiem of Hotels.ng, and we want to aim for a bigger event, bigger prizes, and more participation next year,” he said.

Dr. Nworu called for policies ensuring mathematics remains a core subject for STEM-related university and polytechnic courses. “We must recruit top mathematics graduates into the workforce, offer scholarships, and establish universities dedicated to mathematical sciences to equip our students with world-class skills,” he stated.

The Rumexx Foundation continues to drive initiatives that address gaps in STEM education, aiming to inspire the next generation of Nigerian innovators.
