Former Commissioner for Education in Lagos State, Olorunfunmi Bashorun has decried the state of classrooms in the state schools, describing same as worrisome.

Bashorun, who was also the first secretary to the Lagos State government spoke at a programme in honour of Mrs. Iyabo Agnes Elusakin who emerged the 2019 overall best teacher in public schools in Nigeria as well as Mrs. Abiodun Ogunniyi who also won as the 2019 best principal in education district II.

The programme was organised by Ikorodu Division of Women Forum of All Progressives Congress. (APC).

Bashorun who described the two women as pride of Ikorodu lamented over the situation whereby children are made to study under the trees due to over-crowded classrooms, which he also hinged on lack of sufficient accommodation.

He charged the authorities in charge of schools not to hesitate to report similar cases in the axis of Ikorodu to the elders who are ready to take appropriate action to remedy the situation.

Former deputy governor, Lagos State, Biodun Ogunleye tasked other teachers in the axis to emulate both Elusakin and Ogunniyi and wished that such laurels would come to others, putting Ikorodu on the map of academic achievers.

Former permanent secretary and pioneer, executive chairman, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, (SUBEB), Mrs. Oluwagbemiga Benson described the occasion as a forum where excellent performance was being acknowledged, adding that though the celebrants had humble beginning and were humble in conduct, the virtue did not translate into lack of ambition or intelligence, who as teachers had demonstrated ingenuity, skill, magnificence among other qualities and were able to distinguish themselves in academic field.

“Excellence is what drives the world and the two have excelled in spite of all odds and challenges and with determination have overcome every obstacle and it would not be an understatement to hinge their success on self-discipline, commitment to teaching profession, integrity, creativity, sports among others.
