FRSC, SON list gains as assemblage of speed limiter kicks off

Say 43, 595 commercial vehicles install device
Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi on Wednesday commissioned Nigeria’s first assembly plant for speed limiter to roll out about 500 units of the device daily.

Speaking at the launch of Highway Digital Manufacturing plant in Lagos, Oyeyemi, who said the agency’s policy, has led to meaningful reduction in road traffic crashes and creation of job opportunities, disclosed that no fewer than 43, 595 commercial vehicles have installed the speed limiting device.

Oyeyemi was optimistic that the policy would continue to drive investment into the country and support industrialization efforts of the government as well as help the country reduce importation and reserve foreign exchange.

He said: “The Corps in 2017 is focused on achieving an improved post crash care, which will reduce traffic crash by 15 per cent and the fatality by 25 per cent.

According to him, realization is evident as witnessed by the 35 per cent reduction in the fatalities during the last Easter special patrol operations.
Oyeyemi commended the organisation, noting that the investment would go a long way in supporting the campaign against speed related crashes.

Director General, Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Osita Aboloma, who was represented by State Co-ordinator, Lagos, Ugbaja Joseph gave a nod to the product, noting that it meets the agency’s quality requirement.

Also speaking at the Leadership Consult and Chief Executive Officer of Adetokunbo Obayan & Associates, Adetokunbo Obayan called for a holistic approach and proper stakeholder engagement to balance efforts on reduction of road accident in the country,

Executive Director, Highway Digital Nigeria, Fahmy Omar lamented over the country’s accident rate, noting that loss of life to road crashes affect families and national development.

“Speed limiting device is one of the major solutions to road traffic crashes. Nigerians need to be aware that the country is not the first to install speed limiter, if you look at European and American markets, most of the vehicles manufactured come with their speed limiters. Even when you install speed cameras on the road, it does not stop speed directly,” Omar said

He stated that the company develops commercial and private transport solutions that don’t compromise the performance of vehicle and are tailored to the unique African environment.

Omar said the firm has prioritised backward integration and remains committed to winning the war against road traffic crashes in the country as well as provide more job opportunities and boost local capacity in the country.
