LASUMA announces leadership transition ceremony

The Lagos State University Muslim Alumni (LASUMA) will hold its 2026 transition and handing-over ceremony on Sunday, July 12, as the association prepares for a change in leadership while reaffirming its commitment to alumni engagement and institutional development.

The event, scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the ACEITSE Hall, beside the Faculty of Social Sciences, Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, is expected to bring together academics, government officials, religious leaders, professionals, alumni and other stakeholders.

According to a statement issued by the association, the ceremony will mark the formal transfer of leadership to a new executive while celebrating the achievements of the outgoing administration and recognising individuals who have contributed to LASUMA’s growth over the years.

Organisers said the programme, themed “Strengthening Bonds and Sustaining Vision: The Future of Alumni Association,” would examine the role of alumni organisations in promoting institutional development, leadership succession, strategic partnerships and educational advancement.

A keynote lecture will be delivered by Professor Jamiu Oluwatoki of Lagos State University, who is expected to speak on leadership, institutional continuity and the evolving responsibilities of alumni associations in supporting universities and national development.

The event will also feature discussions around the sub-theme, “Honouring the Past and Shaping the Future: Alumni Leadership Transition,” with participants expected to reflect on preserving institutional memory, strengthening accountability and preparing future generations of leaders.

LASUMA President, Dr Abdul-Azeez A. Anjorin, will host the ceremony. The Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and Chairman of Conference 57, Hon. Sesan Abdullahi Olowa, will chair the event.

The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Professor Ibiyemi I. Olatunji-Bello, will attend as Grand Host, while the Chairman of the LASU Muslim Community, Professor Rahman B. Yusuf, will serve as Chief Host.

The Chief Imam of Lagos State University, Professor AbdulKudus O. Amuni, is expected to offer prayers for a successful transition and the continued progress of both the association and the university.

The association said political office holders who are members of LASUMA, alongside other prominent personalities, would attend as special guests of honour, reflecting the growing influence of the group’s members across public service, academia, business and other sectors.

LASUMA described the transition as more than a routine leadership change, saying it represents an opportunity to strengthen unity among members, encourage mentorship across generations of graduates and reinforce the association’s long-term vision.

The organisation said alumni associations play an increasingly important role in supporting higher education through mentorship, scholarships, advocacy, infrastructure development, networking opportunities and humanitarian initiatives.

It reaffirmed its commitment to promoting integrity, scholarship, innovation, service and Islamic values while expanding partnerships with government agencies, development organisations, the private sector and other stakeholders interested in education, youth empowerment and community development.

The association invited members, the university community, alumni groups, students, development partners, traditional rulers, policymakers, religious leaders and the public to attend the ceremony, which it said would also provide opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing and renewed commitment to the advancement of Lagos State University.

The event is also expected to attract sponsorships and goodwill support from members and partners to further strengthen the association’s programmes and future initiatives.
