The Governing Council of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has sacked 18 members of staff of the institution, while five others were also relieved of their appointments.

The Council took the decision at the end of a meeting presided over by its Chairman, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe.

Those affected by the sacked included three members of Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), Lasun Somoye, Abdusalaam Sobbor and E.A. Bankole, who allegedly wrote a petition against the management of the institution to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

It would be recalled that some members of the university’s SSANU had written a petition to the EFCC calling for the investigation of the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Olusola Oyewole, and Ogunlewe for mismanagement of funds.

The trio had earlier been placed on suspension by the management of the institution since August 22 before their eventual sacking.

Others were 10 executive members of the association under the chairmanship of Rotimi Fasunwon and five other staff of the institution.

Those sacked included three medical doctors, Ajayi A.O., Olaniran I.O. and O.O. Salami, as well two health workers, a laboratory scientist and a medical record officer.

The university in a letter dated Thursday, November, 10 and signed by its Registrar, M.O. Ayoola, had based its action on what it called ‘re-organisation in the university system.”

When contacted, the Head, Directorate of Public Relations of the institution, Emi Alawode, promised to send her response on the development, which was not forthcoming as at press time.
