FUTO shut as management denies increasing tuition fees

Following the violent protests embarked upon by irate students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), the authorities of the institution has directed the students to vacate the campus until peace returns to the troubled institution.

Announcing the closure at a radio programme monitored by The Guardian, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Israel Ndukwe; Registrar, John Nnabue and his Deputy, Child Ezenwa said the decision was taken to avert further violence on campus.

They debunked claims of increment in tuition saying only the internet providers on campus increased the amount being charged students on campus for internet surfing.

He said, “the decision to send the students home was to forestall a further breakdown of law and order on campus, we did not want a situation where the police or the military would come in and kill anyone in the guise of maintaining peace.

They appealed to the student’s leaders to embrace dialogue instead of going on rampage and disrupting academic activities assuring of the management’s readiness to listen to their grievances.

Already, they disclosed that a committee has been set up by the management to assess the damage done to the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) building by the irate students with a view to ascertaining the cost.
