Kwara praised for pro-women drive as AbdulRazaq launches empowerment policy

Kwara State has become the first in North Central Nigeria to domesticate the National Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy, marking another significant step in Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s pro-women agenda.

Speaking at the official launch of the domesticated policy in Ilorin on Wednesday, Governor AbdulRazaq said the initiative will dismantle longstanding barriers to women’s full participation in governance, business, and leadership.

“This policy is about building a Kwara where no woman is left behind and every girl can aspire to greatness,” the Governor said. “By investing in women’s education, skills, and businesses, we aim to close the gender earnings gap and unlock the full economic potential of half of our population.”

The event was organised by the Office of the First Lady, Olufolake AbdulRazaq, in partnership with the Ajike People’s Support Centre and Eden Venture Group. It drew dignitaries from across the state and beyond, including the Minister of Women Affairs, represented by Dr. Jummai Idonije, and top female leaders from the judiciary, legislature, and traditional institutions.

Governor AbdulRazaq highlighted Kwara’s trailblazing efforts in gender equality, referencing the state’s Gender Composition Law mandating at least 35% women in appointive roles and a cabinet that once had over 56% female members.

He also cited the passage of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act and the establishment of a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) as part of his administration’s broader reforms.

First Lady Olufolake AbdulRazaq said the WEE policy would accelerate the dismantling of social and economic barriers facing women across the country.

“This domestication is a symbol of our joint commitment to empowering women and girls,” she said. “From entrepreneurship to leadership, Kwara continues to provide fertile ground for women to thrive.”

She praised Governor AbdulRazaq for championing gender equity and credited Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, First Lady of the Federation, for her national leadership on women’s issues.

Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Afolashade Oluwakemi Opeyemi, also commended the administration’s consistent track record on women empowerment.

In her remarks, Dr. Jummai Idonije, representing the Minister of Women Affairs, said the WEE policy represents a new era of economic opportunities for Nigerian women and applauded Kwara’s leadership on the issue.

“The steps taken by the Kwara government are already transforming households and communities,” she said.

CEO of HACEY, Mrs. Roda Robinson, described the policy as a powerful framework for inclusive growth, while Miss Fifehan Osikolu of Eden Venture Group expressed confidence in the administration’s commitment to gender equity.

The event was attended by wives of state officials, traditional rulers, women’s groups, and development partners.
