Parents and guardians living in the Okota area of Lagos have been advised to take the advantage of the Montessori system of education, which allows children learn from very young age how to relate education to real life situations.

The Head of School of Graceland Montessori School, Okota, Grace Okonkwo, made the observation while speaking on how parents and guardians can help boost the learning abilities of their children at home by applying certain principles.

According to Okonkwo, the benefits of the Montessori system of education are far reaching. Children learn from a young age how to relate education with real life. And that is what is lacking in our environment, the application of the concepts learned to real life solutions. It is almost nonexistent here in Nigeria.

She explained that with this style children are groomed to be independent thinkers.

She said: “This style helps children develop an ‘out of the box’ thinking approach to problem solving. In Nigeria, a lot of schools have the name Montessori but they do not apply the methodology. There are some that are truly Montessori. It is the desire to add value and to bring about change in the lives of children in the okota area of Lagos where my school is situated that makes the school management to embark on the sensitization of the people in the area on the methodology and the benefits to the total development of the child.”
