Worried by what it termed ‘ flagrant disregard for the Lagos 2012 Road traffic law, which among others restricted the use of commercial motorcycles on some roads in the state, the Lagos state government has directed Law enforcement agents in the state to henceforth ensure full enforcement and manifest zero tolerance for road traffic law.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Oluseyi Coker, who gave this directive on behalf of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode at the weekend, said as a responsive and responsible government committed to the protection of lives and property, safety of all Lagosians and visitors alike, the state will not fold its hands and allow indiscipline, flagrant disobedience to law and order, loss of lives and property of innocent citizens of the state to continue unchecked.

“Lawlessness and disregard to law and order, he said must stop on Lagos roads, as it is a collective responsibility of all to ensure that sanity reigns on the roads,” he said.

According to him, as part of efforts in curbing the menace of motorcycle operators popularly known as Okada in the state, the state government came out with certain guidelines as stated in Section 3 and Regulation 16(4)(5) and (6) of the Road Traffic Law, which were aimed at ensuring sanity, standard, safety of lives and properties of the people, security of road users as well as improving the living conditions of the people.

The guidelines, he said, include amongst others, the restriction of commercial motorcycles on 475 roads out of the 9100 road network in the state, wearing of standard crash helmet with full protection for both the rider and passenger, carrying of only one passenger, non carriage of loads, children and pregnant women as well as non operation beyond 8pm in some parts of the state, While calling on the leaders of transport unions and executives of various motorcycle operators to ensure strict adherence to the various laws regulating their operations in the state, the permanent secretary said henceforth anyone found to have violated the law shall be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of Section 3(5) of the Road Traffic Law (RTL) 2012.
