Clubs donate health supplies to support maternal, child health

In a united show of community service, four Rotary Clubs under District 9111, the Rotary Club of Isolo, Okota, Isolo Metro, and Akowonjo, have donated essential health materials to support expectant mothers and newborns at Ilasa Primary Health Centre in Lagos.

The donations, made as part of Rotary International’s monthly theme for July, “Maternal and Child Health Month”, include chairs, tables, diapers, mop sticks, weighing scales, bed sheets, mosquito nets, maternity pads, and other medical items to assist both the health workers and patients at the facility.

President of Rotary Club of Okota, Kingsley Chijioke, emphasised that the initiative was driven by one of Rotary International’s core areas of focus.

“We are here to fulfil one of the seven areas of focus in Rotary International, that is maternal and child health. It is part of our commitment to impact the lives of indigent women and children by not only donating items but also educating and encouraging them,” Chijioke stated.

Speaking on behalf of the project team, the immediate past president of the Rotary Club of Okota and current Service Projects Chair, Murphy Okwande, explained that the project followed a direct need assessment conducted at the facility.

According to Okwande, the medical supplies were provided based on the request from the management of Ilasa Primary Health Centre after the club inquired about the hospital’s immediate needs. “Based on their request, we provided immediate supplies. This is something we do every year as part of our service to the community,” he said.

Okwande further noted that Rotary International District 9111, which spans both Lagos and Ogun States, has over 75 clubs actively supporting local initiatives in partnership with governments. He added that the club is also collaborating with Lagos and Ogun State governments to implement impactful health interventions at the grassroots level.

The 40th President of the Rotary Club of Akowonjo, David Amoyefe, explained that beyond the donations, it was also an opportunity to educate mothers on maternal and child health, antenatal care, and postnatal practices.

Health officials at the Ilasa Primary Health Centre expressed gratitude for the intervention, noting that the donated materials will improve service delivery, hygiene, and comfort for staff and patients.
