The treatment of uterine fibroid with the use of herbs is one that should be only embarked upon by one who is quite knowledgeable in herbal medicine. The major reason for this is because this form of treatment brings out the versatility of the herbal preparations used in the treatment of this condition that is only seen in women as expected.

I call this treatment method a multidimensional approach to the treatment of fibroid. This is so because the uterus is one organ that is connected to other parts of the body by hormones, blood circulation, by its function and by such organs as the liver that is involved in the metabolism and regulation of excess oestrogen. Before I begin to talk about the different herbs that are employed for the treatment of uterine fibroids, I will highlight those areas that will be taken into consideration in the treatment method.

Multidimensional approach to the treatment of uterine fibroid
The uterine fibroid is considered to be an oestrogen-dependent condition. It is a benign tumour that grows in the uterus. Researchers have discovered that it occurs more often when there is unopposed oestrogen dominance in the blood.

Normally in the menstrual cycle of a woman, at the start of the second phase, oestrogen level begins to drop and progesterone increases. When this does not happen, oestrogen secretion may continue unopposed until it is excessive. In treatment, one must bear in mind that the uterus may have become more sensitive to this amount of oestrogen. Herbs that are able to regulate and balance these hormones should be used. Not only that, the liver which metabolizes and eliminates excessive oestrogen should be supported by herbs to carry out its role well. Also, there are chemicals known as xenoestrogen that mimic oestrogen that should be avoided by anyone predisposed to fibroids.

An example of this is Bisphenol A or BPA, a carcinogenic chemical found in plastics. Healthy blood supply that ensures arrival of fresh blood with nutrients and hormones at the uterus, on one hand and fast elimination of products of oestrogen metabolism together with toxins and other wastes on the other hand should be encouraged.

There are herbs that support detoxification of the uterus, blood, liver and the whole body. When this is done, the uterus and other organs that support its functions are made healthy to function optimally. Uterine fibroids may not grow easily in a healthy uterus.

Antiinflammatory herbs should be used to check inflammation, which may be associated with fibroids. There are certain symptoms that are usually encountered in cases of fibroids. Symptoms such as pain that may radiate to the lower back or lower limbs, heavy menstrual flow where a large fibroid is present and urinating excessively as a result of pressure of the tumour on the bladder. When the appropriate herbs that should alleviate these symptoms are used, they are sure to improve the wellness of the patient.

Ultimately, one thing that has to be achieved in this treatment approach is to enhance and support the immune system; to make the uterus function optimally throughout the life of the individual in whom the tumour has developed. There are herbal products that directly support the growth of components of the white blood cells that make up the immune system. Such herbs when administered will boost the immune system. The function of the liver in detoxifying and cleansing the blood, uterus etc not only makes them healthy but helps them to support a healthy immune system.

Herbs used in the treatment of uterine fibroids
1. Vitex otherwise known as agnus-castus or Chaste Tree Berry is a shrub originally from Greece and Italy and it is one of the herbs that are commonly used in the treatment of gynaecological problems in women.

Medicinally useful parts of the plant are the leaves, flowers and berries and these are often presented as tea and tincture. Vitex balances hormones in women. It helps to raise progesterone level in the blood and reduces oestrogen. By this action, vitex prevents oestrogen dominance. Vitex also has the natural ability to shrink small tumours in the wall of the uterus. Concerning the symptoms that are associated with fibroids, vitex has the ability to stop heavy menstrual bleeding that accompanies large uterine fibroids.

Vitex nourishes the body generally, supports the functions of the system and harmonises the hormones.I will present 10 herbs that are used in the treatment of uterine fibroids in next week Thursday’s edition of the Guardian Newspaper
