As part of efforts to improve community health and raise awareness about Sickle Cell Disease, the Okeoghene Samuel Eterigho Sickle Cell Awareness Foundation has organised a free medical outreach in Irri, Isoko South local council in Delta State.
The one-day event provided a wide array of medical services to more than 400 residents. Attendees received free health education, blood pressure and sugar level checks, malaria and HIV testing, eye examinations, and complimentary reading glasses. Medications were dispensed at no cost, and referrals were made for further treatment.
Speaking at the event, the Foundation’s founder and Proprietress of Giantsteps Trasjo School, Erezi Eterigho, commended the collective efforts of donors, healthcare professionals, and volunteers who made the outreach possible.
“Witnessing the profound impact of this outreach on the lives of the people in Irri fills us with immense gratitude. We are thankful for the dedication of our volunteers and medical professionals and the generosity of our donors, whose support made it possible to bring essential healthcare to those in need,” she said.
Eterigho described the initiative as part of a broader mission to enhance the quality of life within communities, adding that the success of the programme has strengthened the Foundation’s resolve to reach more people in need. She explained that the outreach exemplifies the foundation’s dedication to providing resources and essential healthcare support.
“We are driven by a profound sense of responsibility to enhance the quality of life for individuals within our communities. Witnessing the positive impact of our efforts fuels our determination to expand our reach and continue making a tangible difference,” she noted.
Eterigho reiterated the foundation’s commitment to raising awareness about Sickle Cell Disease and addressing the healthcare needs of the underserved population through ongoing programmes, empowering individuals and families with the knowledge and resources necessary to manage health challenges and improve their overall well-being.
Many of the beneficiaries expressed deep appreciation, describing the outreach as both timely and transformative, particularly for those who typically lack access to medical services.
Since its inception in 2022, the foundation has reached over two million people across various communities, offering critical health interventions and educational support. The organisation’s yearly outreach continues to grow in reach and impact, thanks to strategic partnerships and community-driven support.
