The World Health Organization in it’s effort to combat malaria has called for sustained funding and urgent action to end malaria in Nigeria.
The WHO director of West and central Africa programmed Dr. Kolawole Maxwell made the disclosure on Saturday while briefing journalist on event which marks the commemoration of the World Malaria Day in Yola.
Kolawole noted that the theme of the 2026 Malaria Day, Driven to end malaria, now we can, now we must depict the intention of world health organization aim at completely ending malaria in Africa which serve as a call to action for everyone Nigerian and the government.
He emphasize that ending malaria requires “ sustained funding by the government, good environmental hygiene especially in the face of the rainy season to maintain mosquito free environment and effective use of mosquito net by the populist”.
The Adamawa state permanent secretary Buba Mathias represented by the director Ministry of Finance, Nuhu Yahaya noted that the state has perform immeasurably in the fight against Malaria.
He said, “The theme of the 2026 malaria day is a great call to action to move beyond credible progress. Adamawa state has made a commendable stride in malaria prevention and control through strategic partnership and sustained daily commitment “.
We have successful implemented key interventions which includes; purchasing and distributions of long lasting insecticidal nets, seasonal malaria chemo prevention for children under five and, improved access to prompt diagnosis.
Nuhu further noted that the state have further Strengthen it health care system to ensure essential malaria services in high quality, adding that surveillance activities have also been enhanced for data collection and reporting which has contributed to reduction in malaria prevalence in the state.
He added that challenges recorded were inconsistent and correct use of the insecticidal nets, some communities also are facing barriers in accessing health care system. Misinformation and deeply rooted cultural beliefs has further hinder the adoption of preventive measures and timely treatment, he said.
The director urged stake holders to intensity their efforts to communities and households to effectively make use of the insecticidal nets, seek immediate medical attention and maintain good environmental hygiene.
Speaking earlier the state malaria elimination program manager Benjamin Nashion, noted that the commemoration of the 2026 malaria day is marked by series of activities such, medical outreach, educating women on anti natal care and their role in preventing malaria for the new born, integrated campaign for textile treated Net and seasonal malaria chemical prevention.
He noted that the exercise are all aimed at protecting Nigerians from malaria and end Malaria.
