How is curbing alcoholic drink adulteration in Nigeria

The alcoholic drink market of Nigeria is one of the striving industry of Nigerian manufacturing sector, despite being at the maturity stage of its life cycle. Increase in disposable income and urbanization support demand for alcoholic beverages in the Nigerian market.

Nigerian consumer use wines & spirit as a social product. Its consumption is an integral part of our culture of celebration, even to the most primitive Nigerian. It evokes a social statue to consumers in the eyes of the public and can be used to signal equality or social membership amongst the consumers.

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) ‘Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health’, Nigeria is estimated to have the highest annual alcohol consumption in Africa. An average Nigerian consumes about 12.28 liters of alcohol per annum.

The terrible part is, a large chunk of what is being consumed is fake or better still adulterated products. Which means we have a growing market, that is far from regulated and the traders involved are more kin on profit as opposed to the quality of the product they sell.

So, the question is, who is protecting the growing consumer?

Nigeria has a regulatory agency called NAFDAC, The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control. It is a federal agency under the Federal Ministry of Health that is responsible for regulating and controlling the manufacture, importation, exportation, advertisement, distribution, sale and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals and packaged water in Nigeria.

Also, we have The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) which is the sole statutory body that is vested with the responsibility of standardizing and regulating the quality of all products in Nigeria.

One would assume with these agencies, there should be a control on the quality throughout the entire supply chain. But unfortunately, space is so dynamic, that both agencies might need to open a specific department for this industry & so far that hasn’t been the case.

An indigenous startup like has found a notch in the lapses of the supply chain and have been doing great over the years since they launched in 2016.

Myshayo has developed a good relationship with major manufacturers, importers & brand promoters. As such, they get to move products directly from them and service their customers through their mobile-optimized website, their interactive mobile APP that can be found on both iOS and Google Play stores and other non-conventional modes such as phone call via their customer care line: 09087188231 – 2 or via WhatsApp on 09087188231.

A customer can simply order drinks in cases from a wide range of varieties in few clicks, at wholesale price and have it delivered to their doorstep anywhere in Nigeria. I mean anywhere in Nigeria!

We had a chance to chat with the CEO – Oluwaseyi Adepoju, to ask how the journey has been so far.

“It’s been pretty exciting all through & it has been a learning curve all through the years! Right now, we are better positioned, and we’ve become a household name. Furthermore, we’ve expanded also over the years from one city to delivering all over the nation today!

We promise to keep innovating more ways to keep customers engaged and to make the whole purchase experience, easier, simpler & rewarding.

Because for us, it is important the customer wins all the time and with our service, the adulteration issue has never being a case.

We can guarantee the authenticity of all the product we offer our customers. Furthermore, we have done a lot of awareness about the issue thereby being at the forefront of the #buyauthentic drinks campaign.

We believe in no time, the awareness would have grown exponentially and the fake drink’s syndrome would have been brought to its barest minimum.

Manufactures and brand owners are very much happy to work with us and they are all happy to partner with us at all front.”
