‘How to achieve good governance in Nigeria’

For Nigeria to achieve the desired good governance, there is need for all leaders to comply with the guidance of Almighty Allah and train the future leaders to tow the righteous path.

Lagos State Commissioner for Homes Affairs, Dr. Abdul-Hakeem Abdul-Lateef, who disclosed this at the yearly Ramadan lecture of Ansar-Ud-Deen College Isolo Old Students Association in Lagos, said, good governance starts from home because the products are the managers of the society.

While speaking on the topic ‘Good governance and social justice in Islam’ Abdul-Lateef said: “If we are to achieve good governance, we must comply with the guidance of Almighty Allah just as the maker of a product prescribed ways and manner of making use of the product.

“Allah who created us also gave us a manual which is the Holy Quran. People need to learn and understand the Quran; you don’t just read the Quran without understanding it. You must understand the meaning for it to be impactful in your life.”

Explaining further that good governance start from the home, he said: “If your child is well brought up, the society will be better for it. You find out that the rate of killing and kidnapping is on the high side. This has a lot to do with child upbringing and what the past administrations have done.”

He urged Muslims to imbibe the legacy of selflessness, charity, generosity, self restrained, decency, piety, righteousness, adding that those are the values established by Islam and Muslims.

“We need to take a look at ourselves and open a new chapter,” he said.

The President of Ansar-Ud-Deen Colledge Old Students Association, AVM S.O. Smith, urged Muslims to use the period of Ramadan to reflect on their past, repent from their wrong doings and move closer to the Almighty Allah.

“I pray that as we fast and offer prayers to Allah, may we find love, peace and happiness, “he said.

The Chairman of the Ramadan Committee, Dr. Tajudeen Afolabi said “ The Lecture is carefully chosen to sensitize our leaders on what it take to be good leaders and the expectations of those that are governed.”
