How we averted crisis in Abalama- IYC IJAW
The Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide has claimed to have prevented a potential bloodbath in Abalama, Asari Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.
According to a statement by the IYC Secretary-General, Maobuye Nangi Obu, the council’s swift action averted a violent confrontation during a reception in honour of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, last Saturday.
“We resisted the temptation to react to the provocation, and instead, chose to swallow the bitter pill,” Obu said.
Obu alleged that the event organizers had planned to provoke the Ijaw youths into violence, which would have resulted in carnage and led to a military lockdown in the peaceful community.
“It is better to be described as weak or cowards than let enemies of our land kill innocent people,” Obu stated.
The IYC scribe claimed that an intelligence report indicated that security forces and non-state actors were instructed to carry out the bloodletting. He stated that the IYC’s decision to retreat from the scene foiled the plans.
Meanwhile, the IYC has commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for allowing peace to prevail and has praised leaders like Boma Goodhead for their bravery.
The council has also urged President Bola Tinubu to reprimand Minister Wike for his actions and comments, which have been deemed anti-Ijaw.
