Ijegun-Copy“Please, we are calling on the local council Executive Secretary, Mr. Wale Azeez, to help us out of this darkness,’’ was the stringent plea of Mr. Badmus Odugbeso, one of the residents of Kudeyibu Estate, Ijegun, bemoaning over a year of power outage in the area.

Odugbeso, narrating the plight of residents, said claims by most Nigerians of improved electricity since the advent of President Mohammed’s administration has made them feel they are living in another country.

“I have been living in this area for over 10 years and ever since, there has never been any development project in this community. Every little infrastructure in this estate has been through the Community Development Associations (CDAs) with the cooperation of everyone.

“We have given up hope of getting anything from government at all tiers. However, we feel we should not be left out of the improved electricity, which everyone is commending the present administration for. This is why we are crying out to at least enjoy this little dividend of democracy and we would be grateful if our Executive Secretary can spearhead this initiative for the community and take us out of darkness,” he said.

At the moment, the community gets a few hours of electricity once or twice a week. According to the community members, everything has been done on their part to remedy the situation. They have purchased transformers and fitted high-tension cables for distribution, but supply from Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) has been epileptic, despite regular payment of their bills.

Another community leader lamented the huge expenses being spent on petrol daily to fuel their generators, which has become a pain on their neck. He, however, thanked the state government for completing the Ijegun-Jakande Estate Gate road, which took several years of construction.

“Insecurity is high, our lives are not safe, we are only managing by the grace of God. We want our council chairman to come to our rescue and alleviate our pains.”

When contacted, the Information Officer of Ikotun Igando LCDA, Mrs. Bankole Buki, promised to provide an appropriate response after consulting with the Executive Chairman, which was still being awaited as at press time yesterday.
