In order to strengthen the history of Nigeria, the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, has called for the integration of museum studies in the country’s education curriculum.

Addressing the retreat of management staff and curators of the National Commission for Museum and Monuments (NCMM), in Kaduna, Mohammed said that integrating museum studies would enable students to have deep knowledge of their culture; have a sense of belonging as well as enable them to know their indigenous arts and industries at early age.

The minister also urged the NCMM to create exhibitions to showcase cultural similarities among the ethnic groups in order to strengthen the cultural bond among Nigerians.

He further tasked the commission to induce a cultural rebirth, reawakening and reorientation that would promote national peace and harmony, stressing that such will promote youth empowerment, employment generation and improve the country’s non-oil revenue base.

“Efforts should be geared at making more sites enlisted as World Heritage Sites, which will further widen the spot the nation occupies on the global cultural tourism map.”

He assured that the Federal Government will not relent in repositioning the nation by ensuring a corrupt-free Nigeria, as well as pursuing a diversified economy that is less dependent on revenue from oil and “seamlessly move the country back to its enviable position among the comity of nations.”

Earlier, the NCMM Director General, Yusuf Abdallah Usman, stressed the essence of ethical rebirth of Nigerians in order to shape their minds and conduct. He added that, “Museums hold the cultural wealth of the nation in trust for all generation and by its function and unique position, have become the cultural conscience of the nation.”
