Nigeria ranks second largest contributor to the under-five and maternal mortality rate in the world, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Worried by the growing incidence of maternal and child mortality in Nigeria, Jumia, the online shopping site has partnered with The Audrey Pack, a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) on women’s health, to promote maternal and child health as well as to empower millions of women and their families across the country.

The partnership is designed to support The Audrey Pack in the fight against maternal and child infant mortality in Nigeria and also to join the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Sustainable development Goals (SDG) to empower women as well as to provide pregnant and new mothers with relevant health information.

The partnership also kicked off the maiden edition of the Jumia Baby Week running from May 2nd to 5th, 2017 where parents all over Nigeria can shop the best prices on all baby items from global brands like diapers, kits and others.

Nigeria ranks second largest contributor to the under-five and maternal mortality rate in the world, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

To reduce the incidence in Nigeria, the Audrey Pack, distributes millions of free pre-natal materials to mothers across Nigeria as well as antenatal materials to various healthcare professionals. Pregnant women and new mothers are encouraged to register in hospital to receive these materials for antenatal care and immunization.

Speaking at a press conference to launch the Jumia Breast Feeding Room at the Audrey Pack office, Ogba, the Chief Executive Officer, Jumia, Juliet Anammah said, “Jumia is proud to be associated with The Audrey Pack and its mission of promoting maternal and child health. We stand with the implementation of the SDG in Nigeria and we are committed to playing our part in empowering vulnerable segment of the society.”

The Chief Executive Officer, The Audrey Pack, Lilian Odim said, the initiative was borne out of her personal experience as she gave birth to a premature child, forcing her to extend helping hands to vulnerable women who are also victims of premature birth.

“I would like to see that in two years, there is a positive change in the statistics of maternal and child mortality in Nigeria. I want to be part of that change. With the online opportunities offered by Jumia, we are also committed to supporting and promoting commerce among women affiliated with The Audrey Pack,” she added.
