Keyamo, Oke, 28 others make SAN shortlist

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee has shortlisted 30 legal practitioners for the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).The list, which comprises human rights lawyer, Festus Keyamo, was released yesterday in Abuja by the Chief Registrar of Supreme Court and secretary to the committee, Hadizatu U. Mustapha.

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee has shortlisted 30 legal practitioners for the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).The list, which comprises human rights lawyer, Festus Keyamo, was released yesterday in Abuja by the Chief Registrar of Supreme Court and secretary to the committee, Hadizatu U. Mustapha.

According to her, the shortlists emerged after a three-day meeting which ended yesterday.She said: “At the 127th general meeting of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee held today (yesterday), the committee, pursuant to its powers under Section 5 of Legal Practitioners’ Act, Laws of the Federation 2004 as amended, has appointed 30 legal practitioners to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.”

The list also includes former Legal Adviser, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and governorship aspirant in Ondo State, Olusola Oke; Chibuike Nwokeukwu; Johnnie Egwuonwu; Bert Igwilo, Sylvester Elema; Ikenna Egbuna and Wilcox Abereton.

Others are Michael Aliyu; Akinlolu Osinbajo; Francis Egele; Professor Anefiok Essien of the University of Uyo; Professor Sadiq Shikyl; Professor Adebambo Adewopo; Professor Adedeji Adekunle (Director, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies); Nasser Dangiri and Oluwatoyin Ajoke Bashorun, the only female beneficiary.

The rest were Emeka Okpoko; Sani Garun-Gabbas; Abdul Ibrahim; John Odubela; Gboyega Oyewole; Joshua Musa; Ibrahim Mohammed; Ekemejero Ohwovoriole; Oyetola Oshobi; Sulaiman Usman; Kehinde Ogunwumiju; Chiesonu Okpoko and Kamaldeen Ajibade.

According to the chief registrar, “156 candidates applied for the rank out of which 123 qualified for the first stage of the contest. At the end of the first round of screening, 72 names were shortlisted out of which 30 candidates were successful for the conferment of SAN.”

“Out of the number, 26 of them would be admitted into the inner Bar while four are from the academia.”She also disclosed that although four women had originally applied, only one of them scaled through. The swearing-in holds in September.
