In line with the Yaba High Court ruling, which directed Maroko evictees to go for mediation with the Lagos Building Investment Company (LBIC) to resolve the accommodation crisis in Ikota Low-Cost Housing Estate, both parties have started the meditation session in Alausa.

Speaking about the mediation, the Secretary to the Ikota landlords association, Shonuga Adeyemi said it started with lawyers representing the parties agreeing to visit the locus in quo to examine the accommodation problem of the evictees who were resettled in Ikota. He regretted that developers are not complying with court orders as they are now building fences to force out the people living in one side of the estate.

“This is a government allocated estate, you cannot just come in like that to demolish our property. They have tried all their possible best to force us out of the estate but we thank God that God has been helping us out,” he said.

He disclosed that their lawyer was disappointed with what he saw during his visit to the estate recently.

“As I am speaking now, although they made an entrance for our people to walk in and come out, I believe that later on, they are still going to build a gate to restrict them. There is a plan to bring a gate there, which they know very well it’s not going to work out.”

He recalled that the governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu promised to look into the matter during his campaign in Ikate recently.

“We told the governor that there is ongoing demolition in our community. He said we should calm down, that he was coming to visit the community. He promised to ensure that they meet with him at a round table to discuss the matter.”
