Students of Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja, have emerged overall winner of 2015 Junior Achievement Nigeria (JAN) Company of the Year (COY) competition.

The students won the competition through a variety of hands-on activities, which they showed dexterity in, by developing a better understanding of their role in a global economy.

For emerging national champion, the school will represent Nigeria at the African finals in Gabon next month.

COY programme, according to its organisers was designed to build young, conscientious, business leaders that would become financially independent.

Executive Director of JAN, Efua Edeh, while speaking at the competition described COY as one of the organisation’s initiatives that deals basically with the theory aspect of its programme, targeted at exposing the students to the basic elements of starting a business.

According to her, the programme teaches the students how to map out business plans, conduct feasibility studies, know the product for the right people and give back to the society through corporate social responsibility (CSR).

“We train the students to be ethical in doing their businesses and to have competitive advantage over rivalry companies that are into the production of similar products. We make them understand that with competitive advantage, one would create a niche for his/her self,” she added.

“The training helped students to develop the characteristic of entrepreneurs, including the ability to take risk while in business.”
