Mao Collection lights up Lagos runway with dazzling elegance

As the Mao Collection returned to the runway, it reminds everyone that glamour, when handled with confidence, can still feel fresh. Presented on January 14th, 2021 by HN Clothings, the showcase was less about restraint and more about an unapologetic embrace of sparkle, volume, and statement-making silhouettes.

The designer, Chikodinaka Perpetua Chima sent out a series of looks built on the foundation of shimmering fabrics, each one catching the light with deliberate intensity. Sequins, rhinestones, and intricate handwork dominated the collection, yet it never slipped fully into excess. Instead, there was a rhythm to the sparkle — a deliberate choice that reflected both craftsmanship and vision.

One of the most striking ensembles of the night was a silver two-piece set worn with the air of royalty. The fitted trousers shimmered with every step, while the off-shoulder top, layered with sculpted floral appliqué and voluminous sleeves, balanced femininity with boldness. Accessorized with a crystal box purse and finished with a jeweled crown, the look drew applause not just for its extravagance but for its completeness. It was less a dress and more a statement-a reminder that Nigerian fashion has mastered the art of spectacle without apology.

The Mao Collection also played with contrasts. Where one look leaned into maximalism, another softened the drama with sheer sleeves or a more subtle use of embellishment. There was structure in the cuts, visible in the way waistlines were defined and in how volume was controlled at the shoulders. These details showed a designer attentive to balance and ensuring that even the boldest of looks carried an elegance that prevented them from tipping over into costume.

Still, it wasn’t a flawless presentation. A few designs risked blending into each other, as heavy embellishment sometimes muted the individuality of each piece. In those moments, one wished for a sharper narrative thread or a bolder departure in silhouette. But that critique does not take away from the fact that the collection had presence. In a fashion scene where too many collections lean into either timid minimalism or forced drama, Mao sat firmly in the middle, delivering glamour that could command both the red carpet and the runway.

What was perhaps most impressive was how the audience responded. You could feel the excitement ripple through the room as each shimmering piece came down the runway, capturing not only the lights but the mood of an evening that felt celebratory. It was a reminder of why Nigerian designers continue to gain recognition globally, an ability to take cultural love for grandeur and translate it into garments that speak universally.
