THE Ondo State Signage and Advertisement Agency (OSSAA) has urged the people of the state to adhere strictly to the best practices of the agency, especially during the electioneering period to avoid embarrassment as the state approaches the general elections. The urgent appeal was made by the chairman of the agency, Mr. Remi Ofakunrin, in his Alagbaka office in Akure, on the need to control outdoor structures, monitor, regulate, ensure they comply with existing land uses and protect the environment from potential adverse impact of visual blights.

Ofakunrin, who resumed office a few weeks ago to succeed Dare Aliu who is contesting for Akure South Federal Constituency in the forthcoming election, lamented the non-compliance of the general public to the existing laws of the agency, which in no small measure sabotaged the efforts of the government to beautify the state.

He observed, “The uncivilized manner in which the state has been defaced with indiscriminate pasting of posters, fliers on walls and

monuments, illegal erection of billboards and banners across the state without necessary permit and authorization. This behaviour constitutes a nuisance and serious embarrassment to the aesthetic beauty of the state.”

The new chairman made this appeal to political parties, politicians, religious bodies, educational institutions and the general public and implored them to cooperate with the agency so that the state would not be behind among the comity of states that ranked highest in the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).

Ofakunrin said the agency has encountered several challenges from the general public which either flout the special limitations for outdoor structures used for signs and determined by scaling signage to the mass size of the associated building in accordance with the provisions of the agency or mount structures in restricted areas.

According to him: “Members of the public are to note that the position of the agency remains unchanged about indiscriminate pasting of posters and fliers on walls and monuments, illegal erection of billboards, painting of walls etc. Anyone caught in this illegal act will be sanctioned appropriately.”

To regulate the activities of politicians during the electioneering period and in strict compliance with the drive of the agency for a

better atmosphere, he said, “Members of the public, in particular politicians contesting for positions in the 2015 elections are enjoined to visit the head office of the agency at Quarter 54, Alagbaka, Akure, to obtain permit before pasting of posters, erection of billboards, banners, painting of wall, fliers on wall”.
