Mimiko, himself a medical doctor gave out the awards Tuesday at a ceremony held at the State Cultural Centre in Akure. The event tagged “Celebration of Excellence,” was also to honor pupils and students from primary and secondary schools in the state for their outstanding performances in various examinations conducted in the state as well as national and international competitions.

The governor, who was elated at the outstanding performances of the recipients, reiterated his administration’s determination to invest in education as the bedrock of societal development, stressing that no nation can develop beyond the level of enlightenment of her citizenry.

He assured that the event would be an annual one where outstanding performances in education would be recognised and appreciated by the state government.

He noted that his administration has laid a solid foundation for sustainable development in the education sector, through the provision of 21st century educational facilities that would make products from the state globally competitive.

Earlier in his welcome speech, the state Commissioner for Education, Mr. Jide Adejuyigbe, enumerated some outstanding performances of students from the state both at national and international competitions. This include finishing first at the inaugural Nigerian Mathematics Queen Competition, National Digitest Competition, STAN Primary Science Competition, National Festival of School Science Quiz Competition, and taking the first and second positions in the just concluded 2015 Cowbell National Mathematics Competition among others.

The commissioner, who described the awardees as role models, urged them to keep the spirit of excellence burning all through their academic pursuits and beyond.
