Moringa farmers to earn N.5m monthly
The establishment of Eden Moringa Factory in Abuja has opened a new lease of life for moringa farmers, with an assurance of earning at least N500, 000 monthly from its cultivation.
According to the Moringa Farmers Association, over two million farmers are needed to service the factory, which specialise in the production of Moringa tea, Moringa oil, Moringa cake, and Moringa-based vegetable oil.
The National Coordinator of the Moringa Farmers, Dr. Shuaibu Adamu during a press conference in Abuja, said: “We need about two million farmers to feed our Moringa factory to get steady supplies. About 600 youths would be provided direct employment at the factory.
“Farmers will be provided seeds and herbicides at a little token from which they can plant the tree. After four to six months the leaves come out, the farmer harvests, dry it under room temperature, and then bring the leaves to us at the factory, then they are paid their money.”
He lamented that the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) almost frustrated them out of business before getting the products registered.
The Managing Director of the company, Mr. Michael Ashimashiga said the factory is ready to accommodate as many workers as possible pending the availability of dry Moringa leaves.
He disclosed that the current demand for the products has outweighed supply as they have demand from Saudi Arabia, Canada, and several other European countries, adding that their collaboration with the Nigeria Export Promotion Commission has made it easier for them to ensure their goods are not rejected at the international market.
“That is why we do no accept Moringa leaves from people that are not registered with the farmers’ body. Farmers who wish to register with them can visit any union bank in their states and pay a token of N15, 000 after which the farmer will be linked to the state coordinators who provide them with the needed seeds, fertilizer, and herbicides for cultivation.
