NAE president seeks deepening of ICT in learning

President of the Nigerian Academy of Education (NAE), Prof. Udogie Michael Ivowi, has urged educational authorities and stakeholders to intensify efforts in incorporating Information and Communications Technology (ICT) into learning, as well as rev up efforts aimed at improving educational standards in the country.

Ivowi, who spoke during the opening ceremony of the institute’s 31st annual conference, held at the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education (AIFCE), Owerri, Imo State, urged governments and stakeholders to do all they could to ensure that the sector remains afloat.

“Teachers need to do a lot in terms of ICT knowledge and application,” the NAE president said, adding that proprietors and heads of educational institutions must put in more efforts towards churning out products that are fit for purpose, as wealth creation lies in the efforts of teachers.

At the event, which also featured the induction of regular fellows and honorary fellows, Ivowi, noted that the academy, which was established in 1985, has continued to play creditably, its statutory advisory roles, as well as, the maintenance of standards in the appropriate quarters.

Provost of the AIFCE, Dr. Blessing Ijioma, in her welcome address, described as commendable, the leading role of the academy in the promotion of standards in the sector.

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, represented by the state Commissioner for Education and Tertiary Institutions, Mrs. Gertrude Oduka, at the event, which had in attendance past and present vice chancellors, heads of federal government agencies, provosts and heads of tertiary institutions, hailed the academy for working towards uplifting standards in teaching, learning and practice, stressing that the theme: “Education and Sustainable Development,” was quite apt.

He urged participants to ensure they come up with useful deliberations so that, “By the time you finish, the deliberations and discussions, we shall never remain the same again.”
