Nigerian Chemist, Cynthia Victor-Oji, gains recognition for pioneering patent, research in sustainable oilfield chemistry

A distinguish researcher and lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, Dr. Cynthia Victor-Oji, is making waves in the field of sustainable oilfield chemistry, earning recognition for her groundbreaking research and patented innovation in eco-friendly oilfield chemicals.

Her 2021 research on Triethanolamine-Cashew Nutshell Liquid Derivatives as Crude Oil Emulsion Breakers has not only provided a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based demulsifiers but has also led to a patented technology (Patent ID: NG/P/2021/125) that advances green chemistry solutions for crude oil processing.

Victor-Oji’s study, published in the Applied Petrochemical Research Journal, introduces a novel approach to treating crude oil emulsions, one of the biggest challenges in petroleum refining. By extracting and chemically modifying cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL)—a biodegradable waste product—she has successfully developed high-performance demulsifiers that break water-in-crude oil emulsions efficiently while minimising environmental impact.

Revolutionising green chemistry in oilfield applications

Victor-Oji’s patented innovation leverages natural phenolic extracts to enhance crude oil demulsification, offering an eco-friendly and effective alternative to conventional chemical demulsifiers. Her research findings demonstrated that Triethanolamine-modified CNSL derivatives possess superior emulsification-breaking properties, making them a viable replacement for synthetic oilfield chemicals that contribute to chemical pollution.

By conducting rigourous physicochemical analysis, chemical synthesis, and industrial-scale testing, she has shown that bio-based demulsifiers can enhance crude oil recovery, improve operational efficiency, and reduce the environmental footprint of oilfield operations.

Building on this success, she led the formulation and evaluation of additional bio-derived demulsifiers, further demonstrating the potential of natural materials in oil and gas applications. Her work aligns with the global shift towards sustainable oilfield operations, reducing reliance on hazardous chemical-intensive separation techniques.

Patent recognition and industry impact

Victor-Oji’s patent (NG/P/2021/125) has solidified her position as a leading innovator in green chemistry. The patent, which focuses on natural phenolic extracts in demulsifier formulation, represents a significant breakthrough in sustainable petroleum applications. This achievement highlights her role in advancing environmentally responsible solutions for oilfield operations while inspiring further research and development in bio-based industrial chemistry.

Her research and patented technology have gained recognition in academic and industrial circles, positioning her as a trailblazer in petroleum chemistry and sustainable industrial practices.

Beyond Research: Mentorship and scientific contributions

Beyond her research and patent achievements, Victor-Oji is actively shaping the next generation of scientists. As a lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, she has mentored numerous students and emerging researchers, guiding them toward careers in green chemistry and sustainable industrial innovation.

She also plays an essential role in scientific communities and organisations such as the Organisation for Women in Science for the developing world (OWSD) and Women in Chemistry (WIC) under the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN).

Driving the future of sustainable oilfield chemistry

Victor-Oji’s patented research has far-reaching implications for the oil and gas industry. As energy companies worldwide seek sustainable alternatives, her bio-based demulsifiers provide a cost-effective, scalable, and environmentally responsible solution for crude oil processing.

With her continued commitment to green chemistry, biopolymer research, and innovative oilfield solutions, She is at the forefront of advancing sustainable industrial practices. Her pioneering patent and research reinforce Nigeria’s position as a hub for scientific excellence, contributing to the global transition towards environmentally sustainable energy solutions.
