Renowned Nigerian serial entrepreneur and product leader, Adebayo Komolafe, has emphasised the importance of market testing, momentum, and adaptability in achieving business success.
Adebayo drew insights from global giants like Amazon to drive home his points on why entrepreneurs must move quickly from ideation to execution.
According to Adebayo, many business owners make the mistake of over-refining their initial ideas without testing them in the real market. He stressed that the true potential of a business is often realized through practical experience rather than prolonged planning.
“As a startup founder, one thing you must make peace with is that your initial business hypothesis or idea will most likely not be what will grow your business, no matter how refined it is initially,” Adebayo stated. “There are some things that must be battle-tested before the gold in them can oyster out. You need to know this and therefore not spend all your time on the drawing board. Get to the market as soon as possible. The best plans are consummated on the battleground.”
Using Amazon as a case study, Adebayo explained that the company initially started as an online bookseller, an idea that seemed unimpressive to early investors. However, through persistence and momentum, Amazon evolved into a global e-commerce and cloud computing giant.
“Startups that stay longer in the game have a momentum that no other new entrant can garner in little time, and that is where the jackpot is—the momentum and the built assets to take on the refined and higher variants of your initial business hypothesis is what makes you win ultimately,” he noted.
Adebayo also highlighted Amazon Web Services (AWS) as a prime example of how momentum can lead to groundbreaking opportunities. AWS, which began as an internal infrastructure solution, now accounts for 74% of Amazon’s profits.
The entrepreneur urged Nigerian business owners to prioritise action over perfection, stating: “Again, I say to you, get working and get building because if you don’t get to the battlegrounds, there is no opportunity for a win. True opportunities are in the momentum and not just the ideas.”
Adebayo’s insights serve as a timely reminder for startups and established businesses alike to embrace adaptability, resilience, and continuous market engagement in their growth strategies.
