NISLT registrar wants schools to engage qualified lab technologists to boost science education


School-kk-CopyEngaging the services of science laboratory technology graduates by state governments and sundry school owners to handle science practicals in secondary schools, has the capacity to radically improve science education in the country, so says the Registrar, Director General/Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology, Dr. Ighodalo Folorunso Ijagbone.

Ijagbone, who spoke at the 31st Annual National Conference and Scientific Workshop, which recently held at the Conference Centre, Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun Delta State, appealed to state governments to consider the implementation of the decision, which was taken at the last meeting of the National Council on Science and Technology, regarding the employment of science laboratory technologists to boost science education.

At the conference, which theme was “Oil and Gas Exploration: the Role of Science Laboratory Technology in the Management of Environmental Degradation, the registrar informed that the institute was working with some agencies under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, to package science laboratory models for secondary schools, with a view to enhancing science and technology education delivery.

He added that to provide benchmark laboratory standards, the institute has also produced science and technology laboratory standards, a document he said was a compendium of what a laboratory should be like in the context of laboratory design, content and functions.

The CEO, who commended the competence of laboratory personnel in the country, added that in order to enhance professional competences among members and also compliment the academic programmes offered by tertiary institutions, the institute mounts annually, series of training workshops on various laboratory techniques, which he advised members to take advantage of.

Ijagbone who called on organisations to invest improving the capacity of their laboratory staff informed that this year, the Institute has trained over 1, 000 scientists and technologists drawn from public, private, industrial and research laboratories throughout the country at its well-equipped multipurpose science laboratory.
