Only 2.6m students secure varsity admission in six years, says NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has disclosed that out of 11,703,709 applications from students seeking admission into universities across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), between year 2010 and 2016, only 2,674,485 students were offered admission.

A report titled: “JAMB Admitted Candidates by State and Gender Within Faculty Report (2010-2016),” made available to The Guardian on Monday lamented the disparity in the number of students seeking admission through JAMB and those who eventually secured admission.

“The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board data showed that 11,703,709 applications were received between 2010 and 2016 while only 2,674,485 students were actually admitted across the 36 states and the FCT between 2010 and 2016,” the NBS said.

According to the report, in 2010, 1,513,940 applications were received while 423,531 students were admitted representing 28 per cent of students who applied for admission across the 36 states and the FCT. Adamawa and Niger states both admitted 38 per cent of students who applied for admission in 2010. Both states received 14,483 and 16,556 applications while 5,678 and 6,278 students were admitted.

Similarly, in 2011 a total of 1,636,356 applications were received while 417,341 students were admitted. This means only 26 per cent of students who applied for admission were offered across the 36 states and the FCT.

Yobe State with 7,879 applications and 3,185 admissions had 40 per cent of students who applied for admission admitted. In 2012, applications received came to 1,632,835 while 447,176 admissions were granted, representing 27 percent of the applications during the year. Yobe State with 9,064 applications and 4,138 admissions had the highest percentage of applications, which translated to 46 per cent.

The lowest percentages of applications were recorded in 2013 and 2014 with 24 per cent and 25 per cent of the students actually admitted during the period under review.

With 11,222 applications and 4,084 admissions, Yobe state had the highest percentage of admissions with 36 per cent recorded in 2013, while Jigawa State with 16,214 applications and 6,169 admissions had the highest percentage of students admission with 38 per cent recorded in 2014.

The highest percentage of applications was recorded in 2015 with 30 per cent of the students who applied actually getting admission into tertiary institutions.

Yobe State with 17,461 applications and 9,703 admissions had the highest percentage of student applications converted to admission in the year, which represented 56 per cent.
