Provost, Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Prof. Balikis Lafiaji-Okuneye, has called for more investment in teacher education to boost quality and ensure that teachers are not left behind in the new world order.

Speaking at the matriculation of 932 fresh students of the college for the 2020/2021 academic session, the provost said government at levels must invest in teachers, who would in turn impact their students for the country’s overall growth and development. The matriculation ceremony held at Oluremi Tinubu multi-purpose hall.

While welcoming the new students, Prof Lafiaji-Okuneye reminded that education is not only a fundamental human right, it is also an enabling right. She noted that without qualified and skilled teachers, qualitative teaching and learning would remain a mirage.

The provost said before COVID-19 pandemic, the world was already facing formidable challenges in meeting the requirement of education as basic human right.

“The World Bank in 2012 concisely captured the failing state of education in Nigeria when it posited that the products of the nation’s tertiary education system are half-baked and unfit for the world of work. Although it is evident that we cannot return to the world as it was before the pandemic, we urgently require investment and structural change in teacher education system,” the provost stated.

Lafiaji-Okuneye said ACCOED is privileged to have discovered the enormous potentials in teacher education and innovation, adding, “we source, support, and sustain superlative innovations that address inequality and provide all young people with skills to build a better future for themselves and their communities.”

While congratulating the matriculating students, she urged them to work hard and resist any form of obstacle that may impede their successes.

She said: “Your performance is the channel to exhibit your talent and breakthrough is guaranteed when you transform your talent into skills. I implore you to attend classes punctually, you are expected to do and submit all assignments promptly using the state-of-the-art digital library and other ultra modern educational facilities provided by the college to enhance quality learning and teaching.”
