RNI brings healthcare, greenery, sanitation to Alaguntan
The Alaguntan community in Ajah, Lagos, witnessed a wave of positive change on March 1, 2025, as Refuge Network International (RNI), also known as Refuge Charitable Network Nigeria (RCNN), launched a multi-faceted initiative aimed at improving healthcare, environmental sustainability, and sanitation. With approximately 100 volunteers working across different sectors, the impact was both immediate and long-term, leaving community members expressing deep gratitude.
RNI’s Medical Outreach programme provided essential healthcare services to residents at no cost. Doctors and healthcare professionals offered free medical consultations, diagnostic tests, and health education to hundreds of people. For many residents, this was an opportunity to receive medical attention they otherwise could not afford.
“Healthcare should never be a luxury,” said Charles Gimoh, founder of RNI. “We believe that every individual, regardless of their economic status, deserves access to basic medical care. Seeing the smiles on people’s faces today reassures us that we are on the right path.” A resident who benefited from the outreach described it as “a life-saving experience,” emphasising how important such interventions are for underprivileged communities.
In a move to promote environmental sustainability, RNI launched a large-scale tree-planting campaign throughout Alaguntan. Volunteers planted numerous trees in public spaces, reinforcing the importance of preserving nature and improving air quality. “Trees are more than just plants; they are symbols of hope and longevity,” Gimoh said. “Our goal is not just to plant trees but to plant a mindset that values and protects our environment for generations to come.”
Beyond healthcare and greenery, RNI also tackled waste management and sanitation. Volunteers were divided into groups focused on raising awareness, clearing debris, and educating residents on proper waste disposal. The cleanup campaign resonated with community members, who joined in the effort. “You came at the right time,” one resident said, noting how urgent the need for better sanitation had been. Gimoh emphasised the importance of such initiatives in sustaining community health. “A clean environment is a healthy environment. We must all take responsibility for the spaces we live in.”
With this initiative, RNI continues to build on its commitment to creating a lasting social impact in Nigeria.
