About 500 orphans, children of widows and those living with disabilities have been supported with school uniforms, pairs of socks, tie, berets, sandals, bags, exercise books, mathematical set, texts books, wheelchairs, guide cane and payment, among others.

At the ceremony dubbed, ‘A Day Out with special children’ the Executive Director, Human Development Initiatives, Mrs. Olufunso Owasanoye, said since education is the gateway to human development, being a child with disability or one that has lost one or both parents should not be a limitation to accessing good education.

She said government alone cannot meet the educational needs of these children, which is why HDI-Education Trust Fund supports selected beneficiaries from primary and secondary to tertiary institutions, based on consistent good behaviour and their academic performance.

“Human Development Initiatives-Education Trust Fund (HDI-ETF) is an extension of HDI’s projects that focus on widowers/widows’ children, orphans as well as children living with disabilities. HDI-ETF is a foundation set up to address the plight of special children, many of whom are highly prone to dropping out of school, as a result of their challenges or inability of the surviving parent or guardian to meet their educational needs,” Owasanoye said.

According to her, the main objective of the event is to give some of the children a sense of belonging, acceptance and confidence through educational scholarship.

One of the beneficiaries, Mbuotidem Joseph, a student of Gbaja Girls Senior High School, Surulere, Lagos, commended the foundation, as the support would give great relief to her mother, who has been providing all she needed for schooling. She said it has not been easy for her mother to provide for her since she lost her father.
