The Acting Registrar/CEO of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), Dr Donald Ofili, has reiterated the council’s commitment to collaborate with the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science (WAPCMLS) to advance diagnosis and medical laboratory service, using cutting-edge innovations and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Speaking at the 5th Regional Conference of the College, Ofili said that the convergence of artificial intelligence and cutting-edge innovations presents unprecedented opportunities for transforming the medical laboratory ecosystem in the country.
He stressed the imperative for the college to lead the charge in strengthening laboratory advancement across West Africa and harnessing new frontiers for the benefit of communities.
Ofili recalled the role of MLSCN in the establishment of the college, adding that the council was instrumental to founding WAPCMLS. “As a regulatory body, MLSCN is charged with the critical responsibility of maintaining standards in medical laboratory practice in Nigeria.
“Our role encompasses ensuring quality, professionalism, and ethical conduct within the medical laboratory science profession, ultimately safeguarding public health. The college has grown to become a beacon of excellence, fostering specialised knowledge and producing highly skilled professionals who are contributing significantly to healthcare in the region.”
He charged the fellows of the college to be actively involved in the exchange of professional skills and ideas across the West African sub-region, stressing that this collaborative spirit will be crucial in complementing the vital work of the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) in promoting health and well-being across our member states.
Ofili noted that by sharing expertise and working together, WAHO and the college can collectively elevate the standard of medical laboratory services and contribute to a healthier West Africa.
While expressing satisfaction with the college’s growth within such a short period, Ofili stated that “WAPCMLS has risen to become a beacon of excellence, cultivating specialised knowledge and producing highly skilled professionals.”
He expressed the commitment of the council to work closely with WAPCMLS to strengthen its mandate and ensure that fellows receive proper recognition within the public service.”
Ofili urged the fellows to maintain excellence and continue to distinguish themselves through professionalism, expertise and commitment to excellence expected of their fellowship status.
