Students benefit from inner wheel health talk, screening

Students of Anastasia Comprehensive College, Abule Egba, Lagos, were among beneficiaries from nine schools that participated in the free breast and cervical cancer talk, followed by screening, held at Ojokoro Local Council Development Area. The event was organised by the Inner Wheel, District 911, Nigeria, and presided over by its Chairman, IWM Abimbola Oludotun Shoga.

Shoga explained that the programme, which was designed to incorporate girls and women, was executed in line with Inner Wheel’s theme for the year which is: ‘Empower and Involve’.

She said: “It is the tradition of Inner Wheel to talk about cervical cancer every year. But this year, I decided to organise a free screening and also educate young girls on what cancer is and necessary precautions they need to take whenever they see its symptom, as well necessary preventive measures.

“The students are not just to listen to the talk, but to also ask questions and also respond to questions.” Shoga disclosed that 300 girls had been slated to benefit from the free screening exercise, in addition to the health talk with 100 women.

The Guest Speaker, Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Riyike Ogunyemi, who also represented the Chairman, Ojokoro LCDA, Hammed Idowu Tijani, addressed the schoolgirls on breast and cervical cancer and its prevention.

“There is need to educate you on this dangerous disease, which in the past was restricted to adults. But things are now changing and therefore, you should be informed and do regular check up, adopting the method you were taught here today. You can do it by yourself and do not need the assistance of a girl or boy to do it,” she warned.

Deputy National Representative/President of Inner Wheel Clubs in Nigeria, IWM Adekemi Adeyemi, who represented the National Representative/President said the awareness through health talk, followed by screening was in the right direction.
