LAGOS State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences has expressed its readiness to intensify arrests of commercial motorcyclists, popularly called Okada riders, that are fond of plying restricted routes. Chairman of the Taskforce, Olubukola Abe, said the measure was part of their efforts to implement Section 3 of Lagos State Road Traffic Law 2012.

Abe, however, has appealed to the Okada riders to willfully vacate all the restricted routes or risk arrest by his men. The police boss explained that out of 9,100 roads in the state, motorcycle operators were restricted to only 475 roads, which include highways and bridges according to the law.

He said that enforcement of the law will be intensified, assuring that they will not relent in their efforts to restore sanity on the roads while curbing the excesses of okada riders and street traders.

Abe noted that since he assumed office as the Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force on Monday 9 of August, 2015 till date, over 1,000 motorcycle have been arrested while some of the riders have been prosecuted, including street traders/hawkers who have had their wares confiscated by the law courts.

He further appealed to his officers and other law enforcement agents to carry out their duties diligently while enforcing the Law.
