TETFund moves to bring ‘Chatham House’ home with leadership centre

Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono

In the run-up to Nigeria’s general election, Chatham House in London has increasingly assumed the status of a global stopover for leading presidential contenders seeking to project their ideas beyond the country’s borders. The renowned policy institute has become a preferred platform, where candidates outline their visions for governance, seek international opinion and engage foreign policy experts on future direction.

Over the years, several prominent figures in Nigeria’s political landscape have taken turns to address the forum. Past and present Nigerian presidents have mounted the Chatham House podium during intense campaign periods, underscoring the strategic importance attached to the institution in shaping external perceptions of Nigeria’s leadership choices.

But beyond the international exposure sought abroad, the country’s capital has over the years, served as a major diplomatic crossroads. Since the official relocation of Nigeria’s capital from Lagos to Abuja over three decades ago, the city has served as the stage for critical bilateral and multilateral engagements for world leaders.

Yet, the city lacks a purpose-built institution dedicated to hosting landmark speeches, international conventions and policy-defining declarations. It is against this backdrop that Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), under the leadership of Arch. Sonny Echono, planned to establish the first Abuja Leadership Centre of Excellence in Public Governance, for high-level intellectual exchange, leadership discourse and globally significant policy conversations.

The Centre, which will be hosted by the University of Abuja, will also serve as a world-class platform for training, research and dialogue on public governance, leadership and policy innovation.

Conceived as a flagship national institution, Echono, during the foundation laying ceremony, said that beyond its academic mandate, the Centre is intended to elevate Abuja’s profile as a destination for globally renowned speeches, conventions and declarations, comparable to established policy hubs in other world capitals.

The TETFund boss informed that by approving the hosting of the Centre by the University of Abuja, the agency aims to strengthen the nexus between scholarship and public service. He assured that ideas generated within the Centre will translate into practical solutions for governance challenges at national, regional and international levels.

According to him, the facility is envisioned as a natural destination for visiting Heads of State, senior government officials and global thought leaders seeking a credible platform for high-level dialogue in Nigeria.

The Executive Secretary added that the Centre will position Abuja as a city of ideas, where consequential speeches and policy statements that resonate beyond Nigeria would be delivered.

Speaking further, Echono said the Centre will not only help to produce great leaders for the country but will also provide a venue for leaders from other parts of the world to share ideas, offer advice and make statements that will reverberate throughout the globe.

“So, it is a special Center of Excellence that will host several activities, especially those relating to leadership and governance. Leaders from other countries, who are visiting Nigeria, will branch in to address us on topical issues. Nigerians, who have done well in leadership locally and across the globe, will also share their ideas, knowledge and experience at the Centre.”

Earlier, the UNIABUJA Vice Chancellor, Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi, commended TETFund for its consistent support and expressed confidence that the Centre will serve as a national hub for leadership training, policy dialogue and governance engagement.

He urged stakeholders to maximise the opportunities offered by the initiative through learning, dialogue and networking, stressing that the University is determined to make the Centre a vibrant platform for continuous learning and national discourse.

“The Abuja Leadership Centre is established as a national hub for leadership training, policy dialogue and governance engagement. It will help strengthen our capacity for research, training and leadership development, producing leaders who will positively impact national development.”

Also, the Centre Director, Professor Phillip Dahida, enjoined the contractor to execute the project strictly in line with the approved specifications, timelines and agreed standards.

Without any doubt, the establishment of Abuja Leadership Centre marks a deliberate attempt to bring home the kind of serious policy conversations Nigerian leaders have long sought abroad. Pundits say that if effectively delivered and sustained, the Centre could provide a credible local alternative to global platforms like Chatham House, anchoring high-level intellectual exchange within Nigeria’s capital city
while strengthening the country’s soft power and thought leadership on governance issues.

In addition, Abuja will no longer be merely a city that hosts visiting dignitaries but one that shapes ideas, frames debates and sets agenda that matters beyond its borders. The success of the Centre will therefore rest not just on bricks and mortar, but equally on its ability to consistently convene minds, influence policy and cultivate leaders whose ideas can stand confidently on any global stage.
