Testament in this context means covenant. A covenant is a very powerful agreement between at least two people with far reaching implications. It is solemn, grave and very important. It is more powerful than a contract, which is normally a binding legal agreement between the parties. A covenant usually has some spiritual underpinning, which goes far beyond the letter and touches several fundamental issues of life. Any covenant with God should be given the highest priority and handled carefully under divine guidance, Is. 54:10. God will always keep His side of the covenant. The challenge is with the human nature and the heart of man. A covenant with God will nullify all contrary covenants Is. 28:14-18. A covenant is always sealed with blood. When Jesus shed His blood, He made it possible for us to enter into the new covenant with Him.
Blessings Of The New Covenant
The old covenant was between God and Abraham and his children, Gen. 17:9-14. Jesus ushered in a new covenant to include Gentiles, the Church. The following are some of the blessings of the New Covenant:
• Forgiveness of all sins, 1 John 1:7.
• Healing, 1 Pt. 2:24.
• Victory over devil and his wiles by the blood of the Lamb, Rev. 12:11. Victory in all phases of life.
• Abundant life, Jn. 10:10b, 2 Cor. 8:9; Phil. 4:19.
• Peace, John 14:27; Jn. 20:19, 21, 26.
• Citizenship of Heaven, Eph. 2:11-13; Rom.8: 15.
• Intimacy with God, Heb. 10:19-20.
Your Part In John 14:21, 23, Jesus made obedience a precondition for the validity and continuance of the new covenant. Obey His commandments and both He and His Father would pay you a visit. In 1 John 3:16, He said since He laid down His life for you, He expects you to lay down your life for the brethren, Jn. 15:12-14. Bring more people into the covenant – Mk. 16:15-20.
Conclusion
The Lord is faithful and will never fail or break His own side of the covenant. The good news is that He loves you so much that He wants to help you to keep your own side, if you let Him. His commitment is to you and your seed forever. Receive power from Him now in the mighty name of Jesus.
