The Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), has urged its members to keep their compliance level high and shun illegalities that would place them on the wrong side of the law.
The President of the Association, Iju Tony, disclosed this during the inauguration of the newly elected executives of the Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; and Muritala Mohammed International Airport Wing, Lagos Chapters.
“Keep yourselves abreast with import and export prohibition lists, avoid smuggling, make sincere declarations and shun any acts of concealments capable of illegalities that could lead to suspension or blocking of your licenses,” he said.
Nwabunike said it is in the habit of ANLCA to open new chapters where and whenever the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) creates new Commands.
He said the chapters, zones, and national bodies are not the exclusive fiefdom of any former officer or godfather while adding that elected officers owe allegiance to the Association’s constitution and recognised organs of hierarchy as constitutionally outlined.
He warned them against impostors, who will come in the name of board members to threaten them while admonishing them not to give in to the antics of such characters but instead report to the national headquarters of the association.
Nwabunike explained that the tenure of the last board of six years has since expired and anybody parading himself as a board member now may go to jail.
“Please know your right; if anyone comes to you to threaten you with the Police or any security agency, it’s not your fight, just inform me or any member of the national executive.
Nwabunike, who listed successes recorded under his administration recalled that upon resumption as national president of ANLCA, said he met files containing a list of over 300 licenses that were either blocked or suspended from operation by the Nigeria Customs Service, adding that each license has the capacity to provide an average of ten jobs and their non-operational status has kept about three thousand persons out of employment.
“With dialogue and robust interactions, I got those licenses unblocked and reactivated. Today, they are all back to business. It is also important I add that none members of ANLCA also benefitted from this move because our association is truly the mother of others in our line of business,” he said.
He further urged members to invest in relevant gadgets and get acquainted with their usage to communicate effectively and boost their productivity at work, adding that the association would be rolling out training and retraining programmes to boost its professionals and economic growth.
His words: “Our line of business is now technology-driven and must be practiced in conformity with international best practices to synchronise with the government’s ease of doing business and trade facilitation agendas.
“We need to do more to promote end-to-end seamlessness in cargo movements from ports to either warehouse, factories, and markets as our own inputs in the world of e-commerce.
Meanwhile, the National Vice President, ANLCA, Kayode Farinto, while addressing the new interim executives, noted that the ANLCA train is moving so fast that anyone who misses it now, will be left behind.
He said that the National Executive Committee will not spare any Chapter Executive that circumvents the ANLCA Constitution.
