NATURALLY, death is a sad event that affects humanity deeply, because it causes people to be permanently cut off from their families, friends, colleagues and neighbours. Death is the end of all human earthly journey and wandering. Death is a universal experience. The moment someone dies, he/she would be buried or cremated, as the case may be. Either of these act completely severed all relationships with the living. This is one of the reasons nobody wants to die or lose their loved ones.

According to The Christian Bible, there are only two kinds of death. The first type of death is physical death, which happens to all people when they stop living. Microsoft Encarta Dictionaries refers to it as the end of all vital functions or processes in an organism. The second type of death the Bible talks about is spiritual death, when people go through life without having a relationship with God and Jesus Christ. To die physically is to leave our earthly body and our place in the earthly community. To die spiritually, is to miss eternal residence in heaven with God and His people, to be separated from God forever. When we die physically, we can be even more alive, as we take up our residence in God’s eternal home with Him and with His people.

Fear of Death

Individuals have phobia for different things. But when it comes to death, it is rated highest among all other things human beings fear. The fear of death is called thanatophobia. Due to this fear, some people have gone into covenant with Satan, involving themselves in various atrocities. No matter how sinful, holy and prayerful you are, death is imminent for every human being. Hearing words about death is not an easy thing. No doubt, death casts a frightening shadow over mankind because we are entirely helpless in its presence.

Going through life, we are faced with varying degrees of struggles and sometimes one overcomes and celebrates but not with death. Someone said, “Strength and courage cannot overcome death. It has the final word. Only one person can walk with us through death’s dark valley and bring us safely to the other side-the God of life, our shepherd. Because life is uncertain, we should follow this Shepherd who offers us eternal comfort.”
“The Lord is my shepherd; I have everything I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Even when I walk through the dark valley of death, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me”-Psalm 23:1-4.

Death is unavoidable. Personally, I encourage godly and healthy lifestyle, but we can only slow down our ageing process we cannot stop it. One day, death will surely come. Everybody has to face the reality. Only God can help us through death to eternal life and that is the joy of living and dying. You can live again.
