Wimbledon Fashion Brings White To Life

IT is no news that female players have to adhere to a strict dress code when they play at Wimbledon but that doesn’t mean female players aren’t prepared to be daring and fashionable when it comes to their outfits.

Gone are the days when women would wear plain polo shirts and pleated skirts or shorts; with today’s crop of tennis stars favouring spaghetti strapped vest tops, mesh mini dresses and playsuits.

As they turn the court into a runway somewhat, most athletes have been spotted with luxury fashion designers in place of the usual sports brands, pushing the boundaries of the Lawn Tennis Association dress code as far as they can.

The Williams sisters have always been the forerunners of daring fashion choices ever since they came on tour and they didn’t disappoint this year. They have consistently broken boundaries and shown us the fashionable side of sporting outfits.

Serena Williams’s outfit- Crafty Illusion by Nike- did keep to the rule that requires dresses to be all white (and that means no cream or off-white shades), but she incorporated a little animal print detailing in the bottom half of her outfit. It was low-cut and had a panel of transparent mesh around the print to show a glimpse of her midriff.

Maria Sharapova wore a similar style, also by Nike, a low cut V-neck vest with a sheer graphic print overlay. Caroline Wozniacki wore a Stella McCartney designed dress and white shorts complete with a gold trim.

The Danish former world number one said she worked closely with the designer to ensure she had a dress that will make her look and feel confident when she competes. She explained how she worked with McCartney, trying the dress at practice sessions and suggesting alterations and adjustments to make it more comfortable. The result is a low cut vest style top that has a white mesh overlay,

Flavia Pennetta of Italy wore a similar version of Caroline’s outfit but her mesh skirt was teamed with a zip up top.

Other players spotted rocking pricey designer wears include Alize Cornet and Elena Vesnina who wore dresses by Lacoste.

This year, Venus Williams shunned designers for a creation of her own called The Fleur Du Monde. The dress, from her eponymous Eleven by Venus label, is a simple frock with a complicated laced up back. She describes it as “no-nonsense business up front, party in the back.”
Meanwhile, Ana Ivanovic wore the Adidas Fall All Premium dress that has spaghetti straps across the back and she did look stunning in it.

So, fashion lovers can definitely take a thing or two from these fashionable athletes. Who ever said sporting outfits had to be boring, even if they were white?
