Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has ordered the release of five vehicles to fish farmers, traders and merchants operating in the Lake Chad region.

According to him, the support to the fish merchants and traders was to stimulate fishing and distribution of fish products to markets in the Northeast.

Disbursing the fishing grants, at the weekend in Monguno, he said: “Economic activities were disrupted in the state with Boko Haram attacks on military posts and communities on shores of Lake Chad.”

This, he said, led to the massive displacement of about 2.7 million people from their homes and communities.

Lamenting the incessant attacks, he said: “Prior to terrorism, dry fish was commercially supplied to other parts of the country, including Niger Republic, Chad and Cameroon.”

He warned the fish traders against conducting any business deals that could support funding of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorism.

“There should be no illicit transactions that can jeopardise the security of our people,” he said, adding that anyone caught associating with criminal elements would have himself or herself to blame.

He, therefore, urged the traders to cooperate with the military and other security agencies by providing information on suspicious terrorists’ activities.

The governor was in Monguno to supervise the disbursement of N275 million to 90,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and other vulnerable groups of people.

Since 2019, the state government has supported business owners whose sources of livelihood were destroyed in the 13-year insurgency in the state.
