How to actually make work life balance a reality

Yetty Williams

Balancing work and family can be a challenge, but it is not impossible. As a mother, it can be tough to find balance between your work life and your personal life. But it’s important to remember that you can’t do it all. Here are five tips to help you achieve work-life balance:
Schedule some quiet time for yourself

Even if it’s just for a few minutes each day, make time to relax and de-stress. Read a book, take a bath or meditate. Taking care of yourself will help you be more productive and less stressed. Have you ever noticed that when you are really tired or stressed, even the smallest problem can seem like a nightmare? On the other hand, when you are feeling well-rested and centred, you are much better able to handle the demands of life.

Set boundaries between work and home
When you are at work, focus on work. And when you are at home, focus on your family. This may mean turning off your work email when you are not working or not checking your work phone after a certain time. It may also mean setting aside specific times for work and family, such as working from home on certain days or spending quality time with your children after work. While the lines between work and home keep blurring, thanks to technology, you need to put the boundaries in place.

Delegate tasks
Don’t try to do everything yourself. If you have a spouse, partner or family member who can help out, ask them to do some of the tasks that are taking up your time. You can also hire a nanny or cleaning service to help you out. It is okay to get support and help before you burn out.

Take breaks
It’s important to take breaks throughout the day, both at work and at home. Get up and move around or step outside for some fresh air. Taking breaks will help you stay focused and productive.

Don’t be afraid to say no
It’s okay to say no to things that you don’t have time for or that are not a priority for you. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to turn down requests that will add to your demands. It is also advisable to review your demands and activities. For example, because you have been doing something for sometime does not mean you have to keep doing it. Get into the habit of realigning your demands versus your goals and make the right decisions per season.

Balancing work and family can be a challenge, but it is important to remember that you are not alone. There are many resources available to help you, and there are many other mothers who are going through the same thing. By following some of these tips, you can achieve some work-life balance and feel more in control.
