In what ways will the CASIO lab donated to Lagos State Ministry of Education help in academic performances in examinations?
The joint cooperation between Lagos State Ministry of Education, CASIO and SKLD Integrated Services in extending educational support to the Lagos State Ministry of ¬¬Education in enhancing Mathematics and Science learning in Nigeria. CASIO Lab is developed to support the teachers training efforts by Lagos State on the usage of calculators and enhancement of Mathematics learning, by using the CASIO calculator as a tool of educational technology integration.
CASIO Lab is equipped with cameras, projectors, calculators, tablets and computers and is planned to serve as a training centre for teachers as well as a resource centre for the Ministry of Education to create live video sessions on different subjects which would be recorded at the CASIO Lab for subsequent broadcasting to teachers and students.
It will be reflected mainly on the teacher’s performances, and on students by catching the mathematics concept rather than spending more time on a simple calculation, so the focus will be more on the subject being thought.
In addition, the launch of CASIO targeted the training of 600 mathematics teachers from the six educational districts in Lagos at the rate of 100 teachers per day. The Ministry of Education played a key role in selecting training participants across all districts, and 300 teachers attended the training.
Why did you decide to provide CASIO labs across Nigeria?
We are delighted to extend our support for Lagos State Ministry of Education that is playing a vital role in improving math and science learning in Lagos and have launched the CASIO Lab in Lagos, to ensure continued support in the education sector, overcoming the challenging times where the world is still battling the COVID-19 pandemic.
Math Teaching is a means to acquiring education. CASIO lab in Nigeria aim is to support the teacher’s training lead by Lagos State Ministry of Education on the usage of CASIO calculators and enhancement of Mathematics learning, by using the calculator as a tool of educational technology integration.
CASIO support education worldwide in different countries, variety of educational activities have been conducted Math training, math competitions, customized education material, a customiz=sed live session on National TVS in KSA and Nigeria.
Our aim is to be constantly active in the education field globally and have extended our own presence in the Nigerian market. The objective of the lab is to support Math and Science learning through the facilitation of transferring knowledge, and enrichment of knowledge and beliefs through the interactions of the teachers and the learners in the latest technologies in Math learning.
CASIO calculator is the only scientific Calculator listed in the approved book list and recommended in Nigerian curriculums and we are delighted to extend all the support needed to support the Lagos State Ministry of Education in achieving its education goals.
What are the reasons you think students do not have an interest in mathematics?
From our experience with teachers and students through “GAKUHAN” is a training system initiated by CASIO that allows all to utilize the full potential of a scientific calculator. We realized several ways to improve students’ mathematics abilities.
Students tend to find math subjects difficult and some are affected by the myth that it’s a challenging and hard subject to comprehend. Additionally, Math in the old fashion way of teaching is not related to real-life examples so students find it complicated. Nowadays math is from real-life examples and our aim is to make it more interesting and facilitate its learning.
Some other students dislike math because they think it is dull. They don’t get excited about numbers and formulas the way they get excited about other subjects that are easier to personally connect to.
As far as we are concerned, we revamped the “CASIO teachers Forum” for various objectives among which to engage with students and teachers digitally through a platform to discover, create (and share) resources that help teachers and students grow.
Secondly, provide a network to launch discussions that can improve students’ mathematics ability.
What are the ways to help build students’ interest in mathematics?
The good news is that with the modern Math teaching techniques such as Math gamification, innovation, using simulation, gamification in STEM teaching, design thinking, stream education, science engineering and so on, students can have success in math class with the right effort, attitude, and behaviour, regardless of a natural affinity or being good at math.
Also, some techniques that could boost Math learning is dealing with each student separately through assessing skills, and grouping based on the level in Mathematics. Lastly, our Education Business Division and specifically “GAKUHAN” aim is to facilitate math learning and we do extend our support to Math and Science teachers by Helping in educational material, we supply and customize educational resources, by emphasizing conceptual Math understanding over procedures and provide authentic problems and scenarios that stimulates students to drive to engage with math.
What are the career prospects in math and science for school children?
STEM is the direction. STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It’s all starting there. Math and science build critical and logical thinking.
Logical thinking is an essential problem-solving skill; with GAKUHAN training we encourage students to develop mathematical reasoning and real-life experiences. To think logically about something means to think about it in steps. Math is a highly sequential process. We want to raise children to be rational, logical problem solvers who can see the world from many different angles. We help teachers in laying the foundation for these life-long skills.
Mathematical and/or statistical skills could help land several jobs whether one’s aim is to become an expert in the field of Math, Mathematician, professor, analyst, Data Scientist, curriculum designer and many more jobs not only related to Math due to the problem solving and logical thinking skills gained through STEM education
What are the strategies teachers can use to teach STEM better?
Teaching STEM subjects in the most effective way can require non-traditional approaches to learning. STEM industries are continually growing and changing, and so teachers of STEM subjects are taking a creative and adaptable approach to their teaching styles to get the most out of their students. To each country curriculum and countries its’s own way of adapting to the STEM strategies.
GAKUHAN supports STEM learning environment through asking questions and encouraging independent thinking. GAKUHAN training encourages students to problem-solve which is an essential part of their growth in learning Mathematics.
Also in STEM education; demonstration and visualization are the keys. Small tools can be used in Math for example like sticks, balls and others.
