Why Osiri University is intentional about grounding learning in African philosophies – Chancellor

Professor John Kalu Osiri

Education, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), remains one of the most powerful drivers of sustainable development in Africa, yet access to quality and affordable higher education continues to be a major challenge across the continent. From widening inequality to limited institutional capacity, millions of young Africans, particularly Nigerians, still find their academic ambitions constrained not by ability, but by cost. It is within this gap that Osiri University emerges as a bold and timely intervention, an institution designed not just to educate, but to democratise opportunity.

Built on the principle that financial barriers should never determine intellectual destiny, the university offers a tuition-free pathway to higher learning, opening doors for students who might otherwise be left behind. At the helm of this transformative vision is Professor John Kalu Osiri, a distinguished scholar whose career bridges science, business, and leadership. From his early training as a chemist to his global academic leadership, Osiri has consistently explored how education can catalyse societal transformation. His concept of the “chemistry of leadership” reflects a belief that innovation, culture, and human potential, when properly harnessed, can reshape nations. In this exclusive interview with ONYEDIKA AGBEDO and SUNDAY AIKULOLU, Osiri speaks on the vision behind the university, its tuition-free model, and what it means for Nigerian and African students seeking affordable, high-quality education.

There is a growing concern about access to higher education in Africa. How does Osiri University respond to this challenge?
The challenge is real and urgent. Across Africa, and especially in Nigeria, we have millions of talented young people who are ready to learn but are blocked by financial barriers. Osiri University was created to remove that obstacle. We believe education should be accessible to all who are willing to pursue it. Our model is designed to ensure that cost is no longer the reason a student is left behind.

Osiri is described as a tuition-free university. How exactly does this work?
We have taken a different approach to the economics of education. Through strategic partnerships, innovative delivery systems, and a lean operational structure, we are able to provide high-quality education at little to no cost. The goal is not just affordability, but true access. We want students to focus on learning and impact, not on how to pay fees.

What makes Osiri University different from traditional institutions?
We emphasise mastery over memorisation. Many systems reward students for recalling information, but we train them to think, create, and solve real problems. Our classrooms are interactive, our cohorts are small, and mentorship is central. We are building thinkers, innovators, and leaders, not just graduates. Authorised in Nebraska and currently undergoing the U.S. accreditation process, Osiri University represents a departure from traditional academic models. It is not bound by legacy systems that often prioritise exclusivity; instead, it is intentionally structured to expand access while maintaining academic rigour. For many Nigerians, this translates into something profoundly significant – the opportunity to earn a globally relevant education at little to no cost.

Beyond affordability, Osiri University advances a deeper intellectual mission. Rooted in the traditions of Pan-African thought and inspired by scholars such as Claude Ake, the university seeks to redefine education through an African lens, one that embraces indigenous knowledge systems and humanism. This approach challenges inherited colonial frameworks and repositions African identity as a source of strength in global discourse.

Learning at Osiri is intentionally immersive and transformative. Students are mentored in small, dynamic environments where mastery takes precedence over memorisation, and where critical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence are deliberately cultivated.

Faculty are chosen not only for their academic expertise, but for their integrity, impact, and commitment to servant leadership. With a growing global community spanning more than 25 countries, Osiri University is steadily building a network of scholars equipped to lead change within their communities and beyond. Its vision is clear: An Africa that moves from extraction to innovation, from exporting raw resources to building industries, leading technological advancement, and shaping global narratives.

In a continent where the promise of education is often hindered by financial realities, Osiri stands as a compelling response, an institution that not only aligns with UNESCO’s call for inclusive and equitable education, but actively embodies it. For countless young Nigerians seeking a future defined by possibility rather than limitation, Osiri is not just a university, but a pathway to transformation.

Your philosophy includes integrating African knowledge systems. Why is this important?
For too long, education in Africa has been shaped by external frameworks that do not fully reflect our realities. At Osiri, we are intentional about grounding learning in African philosophies like Ubuntu: “I am because we are.” We also draw from Pan-African thought to ensure that our students understand their identity, their context, and their role in shaping the future.

The Council of Elders includes notable figures. How do they influence the university?
We are privileged to have guidance from global thought leaders such as Mallence Bart-Williams, PLO Lumumba, and Chigozie Obioma. Their role is advisory, helping to shape the vision, values, and long-term direction of the university.

Their appointment also marks a significant step in the university’s commitment to building a globally respected academic institution grounded in leadership, integrity, and African-inspired thinking.

Prof. Lumumba is widely known across Africa and beyond for his work as a legal scholar, anti-corruption advocate, and Pan-Africanist. Over the years, he has served in key national and academic roles, including Director of the Kenya School of Law and Director of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission. He is also a respected global speaker on governance, leadership, and the future of Africa.

His addition to the Council of Elders brings experience and a strong voice aligned with Osiri University’s philosophical foundation, particularly its commitment to the Ubuntu principle, which emphasises shared humanity, collective growth, and responsible leadership.

Prof. Lumumba’s presence will help guide the institution as it continues to expand access to higher education through its tuition-free model and globally accessible programmes.

What specific opportunities does Osiri offer Nigerian students?
Nigerian students stand to benefit immensely. They gain access to a globally relevant education without the heavy financial burden typically associated with studying abroad.

Our online model allows them to learn from anywhere while engaging with a diverse, international community. More importantly, they are equipped with skills that are directly applicable to Nigeria’s development.

The university is still undergoing U.S. accreditation. Why should students trust the institution at this stage?
Every great institution starts somewhere. We are transparent about our process and committed to meeting rigorous standards. Our leadership, faculty, and governance structure reflect credibility and global experience. Students who join us now are pioneers shaping the future of education.

What role do faculty play in delivering the Osiri vision?
Our faculties are central to everything we do. We select them not just for academic excellence, but for integrity, impact, and a commitment to servant leadership. They mentor students closely, challenge them intellectually, and guide them towards meaningful contributions in society.

The university also offers the option to earn a master’s degree along the way. How does that work?
Students enrolled in the PhD can earn a Master’s degree at no additional cost in fields such as Sustainable Leadership, Data Science, Food Systems, or Multimedia Studies. This allows for both depth and breadth in their academic journey.

You often speak about Africa moving from “extraction to mastery.” What does that mean?
It means Africa must move beyond exporting raw materials to creating value. We should not
just produce resources; we should process, innovate, and lead industries globally.

Education is the foundation for that shift, and Osiri is designed to prepare students to drive that transformation.

Your PhD in Business Innovation seems to be gaining attention. What makes it unique?
Our PhD is multidisciplinary and flexible. Students can enroll in our PhD with just a Bachelor’s degree or HND, and complete the programme online in three years with a Master’s degree in the first year, depending on prior coursework. What truly sets it apart is that students can focus their research on any area they are passionate about, whether in business, agriculture, data science, or the creative industries, so long as it drives innovation and impact.

What kind of students are you looking to admit into the university?
We are looking for curious, driven individuals who want to make a difference. You don’t have to come from privilege; you just need the willingness to learn, grow, and contribute. If you are committed to creating impact, you belong at Osiri.

Finally, what message do you have for young Nigerians who feel discouraged about their educational future?
Do not give up on your dreams because of financial limitations. The world is changing, and new opportunities are emerging. Osiri University is one of those opportunities. If you are ready to learn and lead, there is a place for you. If you are ready to challenge yourself, think differently, and contribute to building the future—Osiri is for you. Education should not just advance your career; it should empower you to transform your world.
