Edo State Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, has revealed that former Governor Adams Oshiomhole opposed the nomination of his son, Dr. Cyril, as Commissioner for Health-designate.

Governor Monday Okpebholo appointed Cyril Oshiomhole to the role last Tuesday, as confirmed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua.

In a Wednesday interview on Channels Television, Idahosa said that Cyril, a qualified medical doctor who studied both in Nigeria and the United States, was appointed based on his merit and qualifications, not his family ties.

He said, “Senator Adams Oshiomhole is a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and his son, like any other individual, has his own destiny. Cyril is a seasoned medical doctor.

“He studied in Nigeria and went on to further his studies in the United States. He is fully qualified to be in the cabinet.

“The fact that he is Oshiomhole’s son does not disqualify him from holding a position he is competent to manage. He will serve as Commissioner for Health based on merit.”

Idahosa addressed concerns about nepotism, stating that despite being Oshiomhole’s son, Cyril’s appointment was made independently of his father’s influence.

“Adams Oshiomhole was actually opposed to this nomination,” Idahosa clarified, adding that the decision was rooted in the governor’s vision for Edo State and the competence of the nominee.

Refuting comparisons to state capture, Idahosa insisted that the nomination was focused on ensuring effective governance and service delivery.

He further outlined that his main responsibility as deputy governor is overseeing the state’s boundary commission, although he does engage in discussions regarding cabinet matters with the governor.
