Female Genital Mutilation is known as female circumcision and is practiced by many people especially in Africa.

This procedure is very painful and dangerous as it sometimes  leads to infection and sometimes ends in the death of the young girl.

There have been movements advocating for the abolishment of this practice however most people still abide by it and circumcise their female relatives.

A mother in Kenya has been arrested and sent to jail for circumcising her 13 year old twins. She was discovered when a Charity organisation was alerted of the woman’s plan to make her daughters undergo female genital mutilation.

The director of the organisation reported to local authorities but unfortunately before the police could raid and rescue the girls they had already undergone the painful ordeal.

The mother Florence Muthoni, from Tharaka-Nithi county, was arrested on Wednesday and sentenced by a magistrates court the following day in the town of Chuka, Thomson Reuters Foundation reports.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), was banned in Kenya in 2011. However, some communities still practice female circumcision as they believe it is a rite of passage and a social necessity if a girl desires to get married in the future.

The matter is still under investigation as the mother of the twins have refused to divulge who performed the circumcision.
